We have been battling this cold for one day too long. I went to go pick up Annabelle from daycare on Thursday and Miss Katie said that they were getting ready to call me because it seemed like Annabelle was having a hard time breathing while they were giving her a bottle. It’s one thing to have a runny nose, but when it comes to difficulty breathing, my nerves can’t take it. I think I reached the breaking point and could not think of going through one more night. We had her 4 month doctor’s appointment scheduled for Friday, but something was telling me to take her in. Fortunately our doctor’s office has nightly walk-in hours, so we packed up and headed in. The doctor on call was not AB’s doctor, but one we had seen one of the previous times we had been in. This was our 4th visit in for the same cold. They did the routine oxygen level tests where they checked her levels and they were low at first, but then got some high 90’s reads. He reviewed her chart and said he wanted to test her for RSV. The season is over, but because of the length of this cold, she could be still battling it.
So in came the nurses and hell began. It was the absolute worst experience. They had Annabelle on her back with a nurse on each side of her, Andy at her feet and the doctor leaning over. They inserted a tube down her nose into the back of her throat to suction out all the mucous. She was pinned down and screaming and crying. It was awful. Her little nose was so raw because of being sick for so long that she was bleeding all over and coughing up blood. She was a mess…I was a mess. It was awful. Her little heart was racing, face was bright red, sweating and so undone. It was very traumatic and I felt like the worst parents ever. We waited for them to run the tests and fortunately it came back negative.
Then Friday came. We originally had her 4 month well appointment on Friday, but because of Thursday evening, we changed it to a sick appointment, as they wanted to see how she was doing after 24 hours of being scoped. I was glad we were able to meet with our actual doctor this time, as the previous 4 times we had seen other doctors in the practice. We met with Dr. Espe and he immediately started addressing that this had been going on for WAY too long and needed to figure it out. So we discussed for awhile he listened to her and said that she was working really hard to breathe L So he said we were to do breathing treatments, which we administered our first one at the office, and then immediately get started on an antibiotic. He then told us that we needed to go to Children’s Mercy for chest X-rays and labs. We needed to rule out pneumonia and whopping cough…and whatever else they can conclude. So we headed to Children’s Mercy to get those two taken care of. Annabelle did so good. I think she was exhausted from the breathing treatment at the office because she was out cold in her car seat that the nurses just took her labs while she sat in it. The nose swab did wake her up, but she was easily rocked back to bed. Then the chest X-ray was easier than I thought and she was such a trooper. The hospital staff was very sweet and took good care of her. After the X-ray the radiologist said that her lungs looked to only have a viral infection, nothing bacterial, so no pneumonia or whopping cough. Thank goodness. Needless to say our little 4 month old was drug through hell for 24 hours.
This experience made me realize how fortunate we are to have a healthy baby (considering) and have one another. It was so difficult to see Annabelle go through everything and emotionally draining. Just when we thought we couldn’t love her anymore this happens and opened a whole new door. She’s our absolute world! We hope you get better soon Annabean!
Thursday night at the doctor before they started checking her. Happy girl at this point :)RSV machine. Long tube on table was inserted through both nostrils down the back of her throat.
She was out cold once the testing was over and just curled up on me. Waiting for her results.
Here we are in the X-ray room. She was so happy and just talking away.
Here's a picture of where they took her X-rays. She was propped up with her back against the wall and the green pad over her legs. Then she was moved to each side for a side read and that concluded all the images needed. The room had little kid stickers all over the walls and on the machines.
And she's out. I think she was done being tortured and wanted nothing more than to go ni-ni!!!
